MicroCyte to get Firefox support with Firefox 3

Today I had the rather surprising experience of using MicroCyte on Firefox with no code changes at all! It seems that Firefox will support the contentEditable attribute on elements which is the main mechanism that MicroCyte uses to make a page editable.

There are some differences from other browsers in the way Firefox handles formatting commands but that's really not a huge show stopper and I hope to have MicroCyte fully working on Firefox by the time Firefox 3 sees its gold master release.

In other news
In other news, the progression towards a public release of Microcyte is going well with virtually all version 1 features implemented and most bugs squashed. I'm still looking for beta testers so please feel free to drop me a line if you want to help.

I hope to see the first release and supporting website go live at some point next week so check back here then to see what's going on!

By way of a teaser I can confirm that version 1 will support:
  • Much easier template development process
  • Ability to change a page template losslessly
  • Image library for uploaded images
  • Better snippets implementation
  • Link library for quickly adding links to internal pages
  • Publish and expiry dates on pages
  • Vastly improved user management with per-page permissions
There are many more improvements too numerous to mention in this post. The MicroCyte website will have a raft of documentation and screencasts to help developers get off the ground as quickly as possible and all relevant docs will be included in the download (which is now $10 by the way).

I guess thats all for now, keep checking back between now and next week for regular updates!
